Apple is now out of all models except the low-end 400 MHz
Indigo iMac. In fact they list the other two models as a 10
day wait. Macworld takes place in 10 days ... I'll let you
fill in the blanks.
Other than Apple, there is still good supply of iMacs at
other vendors. MacMall has 325 of the 400 MHz model instock
and you should have no problem finding the model you want
... though perhaps not at your first choice merchant.
If you have been holding out and expected to get the Epson
printer bundle and free RIO
600 MP3 player that has been on offer for the last month
or so, you are out of luck, because those special promotions
have come to an end.
However MacMall has a good cash rebate deal on the high-end 600 MHz Dalmatian
& FlowerPower machines. Not only do you get 128 MB of
RAM for free, but they will also whack $200 off the price.
Other bundles also discontinued include Apple's Lexmark Z52
JetPrinter and MacZone's VirtualPC bundle.

Buyer's Guide: iMacs
| DealZone | Prices
| Specs | Discuss
The
iMacs unveiled at the 2001 Macworld Tokyo expo represent the
7th incarnation in the iMac series. The most significant changes
can be broken down into two categories: color selections and
optical drive choice. Out are DVD drives and in are CD-RW
ones (which allow you to make your own CDs). At Macworld SF
Jobs said Apple was kicking itself for not getting on the
CD authoring bandwagon ... it is now making up for that across
product lines - including on the 500 & 600MHz iMacs.
The other big change is in colors ... or rather designs.
Although you can still get the iMacs in the solid colors of
Indigo (low-end and middle models) and Graphite (high-end),
there are now two new flavors of iMacs. At the middle and
high-end you will find Flower Power and Blue Dalmatian choices.
Although these semi-psychedelic designs have shocked certain
members of the Mac press (most of whom have not seen the new
machines in person), it will be interesting to see how they
are received by consumers.
Technological changes include, faster speeds (600, 500 &
400MHz), and a beefed up low-end iMac, that now has FireWire
& Airport slots. Larger drives grace the product line
and the two top machines have 256K of on-chip cache running
at full processor speed, which should speed up performance.
Also beefed up on the two high-end iMacs is a better graphics
card with more memory.
