DealZone - Going, Going, But Not Quite Gone - This Week's Best Deals On iMacs

| DealZone | Prices | Specs | Discuss

For the current iMac Buyer's Guide - click here

Updated: 7/18/01

Apple is now out of all models except the low-end 400 MHz Indigo iMac. In fact they list the other two models as a 10 day wait. Macworld takes place in 10 days ... I'll let you fill in the blanks.

Other than Apple, there is still good supply of iMacs at other vendors. MacMall has 325 of the 400 MHz model instock and you should have no problem finding the model you want ... though perhaps not at your first choice merchant.

If you have been holding out and expected to get the Epson printer bundle and free RIO 600 MP3 player that has been on offer for the last month or so, you are out of luck, because those special promotions have come to an end.

However MacMallhas a good cash rebate deal on the high-end 600 MHz Dalmatian & FlowerPower machines. Not only do you get 128 MB of RAM for free, but they will also whack $200 off the price.

Other bundles also discontinued include Apple's Lexmark Z52 JetPrinter and MacZone's VirtualPC bundle.

MacReviewZone's Picks For Best deals this week:

600 MHz iMac - The MacMall: 128 MB of extra RAM for $30 installation fee and $200 instant rebate (Dalmatian & FlowerPower) . If you live in CA or TN check one of the other merchants because the MacMall has physical businesses in these states and you will pay sales tax (see below). Total cost: $1,324 + $44 shipping. If you want the Graphite machine check out theOutpost

500 MHz iMac - Outpost: 128 MB of extra RAM (no installation charge) or 100 CD-R disks for free and free ground shipping. If you live in CT or OH check one of the other merchants because the Outpost has physical businesses in these states and you will pay sales tax (see below). Total cost: $1,194

400 MHz iMac - - Outpost: 64 MB of extra RAM (no installation charge) and free ground shipping. If you live in CT or OH check one of the other merchants because the Outpost has physical businesses in these states and you will pay sales tax (see below). Total cost: $895

These are just our picks for a basic setup. You will find other, more complex, bundling options below

To give you some idea of what the bundles below would cost you, if you bought them separately, we offer you the following guidance:

iMacs are now shipping either with Mac OS X installed or bundled.

Note: We receive a small commission on computers purchased using the links below. Though this adds no cost to your purchase price, it does help us defray the cost of running MacReviewZone and MacSpeedZone. Your support is appreciated! Shipping charges are to California - your mileage may vary. Also prices quoted are for the bare machine and do not reflect RAM installation charges (usually $30), nor the in-store prices of add-on product for which there is a rebate. Shipping charges for bundled products , also is not reflected in the prices below.

Buyer's Guide: iMacs

| DealZone | Prices | Specs | Discuss

The iMacs unveiled at the 2001 Macworld Tokyo expo represent the 7th incarnation in the iMac series. The most significant changes can be broken down into two categories: color selections and optical drive choice. Out are DVD drives and in are CD-RW ones (which allow you to make your own CDs). At Macworld SF Jobs said Apple was kicking itself for not getting on the CD authoring bandwagon ... it is now making up for that across product lines - including on the 500 & 600MHz iMacs.

The other big change is in colors ... or rather designs. Although you can still get the iMacs in the solid colors of Indigo (low-end and middle models) and Graphite (high-end), there are now two new flavors of iMacs. At the middle and high-end you will find Flower Power and Blue Dalmatian choices. Although these semi-psychedelic designs have shocked certain members of the Mac press (most of whom have not seen the new machines in person), it will be interesting to see how they are received by consumers.

Technological changes include, faster speeds (600, 500 & 400MHz), and a beefed up low-end iMac, that now has FireWire & Airport slots. Larger drives grace the product line and the two top machines have 256K of on-chip cache running at full processor speed, which should speed up performance. Also beefed up on the two high-end iMacs is a better graphics card with more memory.

For a side by side comparison of the current iMac lineup, check out our specifications chart below.
