Apple's "Cool Stuff" promotion
is drawing to a close in just 6 days. If you are interested
in one of the bundled/discounted items (descried below), now
is the time to act. Many folks take the end of a promotion
as a sign of new products on the way. The Cube
Zone, in fact, ran a piece today predicting a new PowerBook
in just 10 days. Time will prove them right or wrong, but
in our experience, new product releases are usually preceded
by shortages in the existing supply.
Of all the stores we track, only one, MacConnection
is out of stock, and only on the G4/400. All of the others
stores appear to have a good supply. In fact, even the Outpost,
which has listed a "1-2 day wait" on all of their
machines for the past couple of months, is now listing same
day shipping on both PowrBooks. MacZone, which hasn't had
their speaker bundle in stock since its introduction, finally
does.
As of this writing, MacMall has only 12 copies
of Virtual PC 4.0/DOS to bundle with the PowerBooks and only
1 Targus carrying case! We opted to list the latter as "out
of stock" since it will probably disappear before you
read this!
Best deals this week:

On July 18th, Apple announced a new promotion
that applies to their entire computer product line. The "cool
stuff" promotion , only available from authorized
resellers, is twofold. The first is a $69 "instant rebate"
applied to the purchase of a lexmark Z32
Jetprinter (Apple store only), Z22,
Z23
or Z53
Printers. The Z32 lists for $69, so the printer is essentially
free. Apple is also offering $100 rebates on the following
items.
*Lowest prices listed above may not be from an Apple
Authorized reseller and is the best price we could find
using PriceZone. Only authorized resellers are eligible for
the "cool stuff" promotion. Be sure to check
before buying!
The "cool
stuff" promotion ends in 6 days on October 14th.

order quite a few before you go over the 100 pound limit)
Buyer's Guide: "Titanium" G4
PowerBook G4/400 and G4/500
While
apple announced a number of products at Macworld (both hardware
and software), the product that generated the most excitement
was, without a doubt, the new "Titanium" PowerBook
G4. Anyone that tried to get close to one at the Apple
booth after the keynote can attest to this.
Previous revisions to the PowerBook line generally amounted
to speed bumps and a modified feature set. The new PowerBooks
sport an entirely new form factor, just 1" thick with
a 15.2" TFT screen and a casing made of commercially
pure titanium. To work within the tight confines of this new
form, Apple engineers had to make some cuts. You will only
find one FireWire port on the Titanium as opposed to the two
found on its predecessor. Gone also is the expansion bay.
A slot loading DVD takes its place. The battery, which has
a 5 hour life according to Apple, has been moved out of the
way to the bottom of the unit.
Other PowerBook features we have come to expect as standard
remain unchanged including the presence of: 2 USB ports, 56K
V.90 modem, 10/100 BASE-T Ethernet, AirPort and CardBus slots,
etc. All of this in a 1" enclosure and weighing in at
5.3 Lbs.! Below we
provide you with a quick outline of the current and recent
PowerBooks' feature set.
As always, we have searched the web to find the best
deals on the Titanium PowerBooks. The new G4 PowerBooks
are now beginning to ship and the bundling deals are starting
to trickle in (see below). If you know of a deal we missed,
feel free to post it on our discussion board below.
