Buyer's Guide: $100 Price Cuts
And $100 Rebates - Life Is Good! Handspring's Visor Lineup
Updated
8-23-01
We were quite pleased when the original Visor series was released.
Until recently, Mac users had been treated as second class
citizens by Palm. Only the newest Palm devices work with Macs
right out of the box. Most have required the purchase of an
adapter kit. In contrast, Handspring
provided cross platform (and much faster) connectivity via
USB from the very beginning. Any owner of a recent Mac could
unpack their Visor and connect it to their Mac without having
to shell out extra cash for a "Mac Pac" serial adapter.
The Visors' initial popularity can be attributed
in no small part to their unique SpringBoard expansion slot.
This expansion slot allows the PDA to assume all variety of
new functions: cell phone, GPS, MP3 player, digital camera
etc. When the first Visors were released, SpringBoard modules,
as they are called, were few and far between. Now there is
a great
variety to choose from.
If the Visor has one weakness, it is the fact
that none of the Visors make use of flash ROM. This means
that you will not be able to upgrade the OS as newer versions
are released. If this is important to you, check out our guide
to Palm PDA's. Some, but not all, Palms use flash ROM.
Handspring was initially overwhelmed with the
popularity of their PDA's and did a poor job of keeping up
with demand. Visors were only available through the Handspring
store and delivery times lagged. Currently, visors are available
from a variety of online stores. We have done all the legwork
tracking down low prices
and availability on the entire Visor line. We also give you
the specs at a glance for all six Visors, past and present.
When reviewing the prices
below, bear in mind that the Visor Edge is part of Apple "Cool
Stuff" promotion. If you plan on buying a Mac, or know
someone that is planning on buying a Mac, you can get a $100
rebate on the Edge.
