Both PNG images above, created with Photoshop 5.5's Save for Web command, have the same background matte (00FF00) applied, and the cells which hold the 2 PNGs are filled with the same color as the matte. The PNG-24 image should appear identical to the PNG-8 image. If it does, then the browser that you're using supports multilevel transparency in PNG-24 images. Microsoft Internet Explorer does not support PNG images. Both Internet Explorer 5.0 and Netscape Navigator 4.7 support PNG images, but only Internet Explorer 5 supports multilevel PNG-24 images. For this reason, PNG is not a recommended format unless designers are absolutely certain that their pages will be viewed with Internet Explorer 5.0 only.
