Hard Cider: More Detailed Pictures
Of The New iMac In Different Angles Of Repose
Sunday, January 13, 2002
by David Engstrom
We took the opportunity, as the Macworld Expo was drawing
to a close on Friday, to snap a few more photos of the new
iMac from different angles. Friday is a great day to do this,
as the crowds at the show are much diminished. In fact if
you are considering coming to one of these expos and only
have one day to spend, I recommend that you come on Friday.
Unless you like big crowds and a lot of frenetic energy, you
will find the atmosphere on Fridays much more relaxed and
you will be able to get much more in-depth information out
of the marketing and technical people manning their booths.

White is the operative word here. White
trim around the screen. White base. White mouse. White
keyboard. And a white ring around the Pro Speakers that
come with the top two models of iMac.
The screen is connected by strong stainless
steel tubing to the base. The Base is quite a heavy
anchor. It feels a little like one of the stones used
in curling.
Over-all the new iMacs weigh a little under 22 pounds.
Two joints, one at the top and one right
before the base rod, allow the screen to lift and tilt.
The screen can swivel 180 degrees. It can not turn all
the way around.
The Base is a little over 10 inches in
diameter (27 cm). The motherboard is also round. However
they did not take the round concept even further ....
the processor, drive housing, CD type drive and other
other motherboard components remain square. You can
see the ghostly outline of the door that covers the
CD drive.
As we were snapping photos of the iMac,
Sal Soghoian, AppleScript Product Manager at Apple,
asked us if we would like to see it stick its tongue
out. Not knowing exactly what he meant, we said sure
(we were up for anything). Over the protestations of
the Apple PR people Sal hit the eject button on the
keyboard and out popped the CD tray. Pretty conventional
drive unit, but it is covered by a smoothly molded door
that fits right into the round housing of the base.
