Buyer's Guide: Apple's September 2000 iBook

Note: iBook DealZone page has been moved and now covers the May 2001 iBooks. Apple's Paris Expo last year saw the introduction of a new round of iBooks. Moving away from the fruit color scheme, the new crop of iBooks sported an in-your-face "key lime," a more conservative graphite and indigo. Colors aside, there were a number of improvements worth noting. The Paris iBooks (for want of a better name) were the first machine out of Cupertino to sport IBM's new 750CX G3 processor. The 750CX does away with the backside cache, usually 512K or 1MB, in favor of a 256K on chip cache operating at full processor speed. Most backside caches operate at half the speed of the processor and the previous iBook's cache ran even slower at a 2.5:1 ratio.

FireWire also finally made its way to the iBook to accommodate high speed peripherals like external drives or DV cameras. Speaking of drives, the first iBooks came with a paltry 3.2 GB drive. This was later bumped to 6GB with the current iBooks at a respectable 10GB. The iBook also has all of the standard features you would expect to find: USB, 56K V.90 modem, 11 Mbps AirPort and 10/100 Base-T Ethernet.

The iBook also comes with a healthy selection of software: iMovie 2, AppleWorks 6, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Microsoft Outlook Express, EarthLink, Netscape Communicator, Palm Desktop Organizer, Adobe Acrobat Reader, FAXstf, Nanosaur & Bugdom.
