Book Review: iPhoto 4 for Mac OS X - Adam Engst, well-known as the publisher of TidBITS, starts by covering all the essentials: importing and managing photos, organizing and editing photos, backing up your photos, and creating albums and film rolls. He also discusses the more creative ways to share your photos, including having them published in a professional looking book that you design yourself, from within iPhoto. Engst goes into considerable depth here, covering all aspects of the book design process– .... Get The Book

How the Mac was born, and other tales - Soon after the Mac's release, much of the original team dispersed, and Hertzfeld was no exception, taking his leave two months after the airing of the famous Super Bowl "1984" ad. He went on to co-found three companies -- Radius, General Magic and Eazel -- but it was his tales of working on the Mac that continued to enthral friends and colleagues. He first published many of the stories privately on the Web and asked his former colleagues to vet the stories for accuracy or to submit their own tales. He later opened the site to the public and has now published the stories, and many early photographs, in book form. .... Get The Book

How the Mac was born, and other tales - Andy Hertzfeld will be signing copies of his book, "Revolution in the Valley: The Insanely Great Story of How the Mac was Made" on the conference floor. Actually, the book's title is a bit misleading--rather than a story, its a collection of dozens of short stories that provide a unique behind-the-scenes look at the birth of the Mac .... Get The Book

Insanely geeky - Reading "Revolution in the Valley," you may feel as though you're sitting in a bar listening to engineers swap stories. You may not understand every word, but you know you're getting the real thing, and that has value. It is, for example, fascinating to look at some of the illustrations in this lovingly produced book and realize that they are photocopies of to-do lists made at the time by the creators of the Mac .... Photoshop CS Artistry: A Master Class for Photographers and Digital Artists - “Mastering the Digital Image” is a straightforward sub-heading on the cover page, and it describes the authors’ comprehensive approach to their tutorial methods used in this powerhouse book + CD combo. Barry and Wendy spend every waking moment and most sleeping hours refining and defining itemized lessons, to take readers and workshop students from beginner to intermediate to advanced Photoshop user. .... Real World Scanning & Halftones, Third Edition: - In spite of its dry and geeky title, Real World Scanning & Halftones should be required reading for all serious print and web digital artists. So many of us take scanning and photo editing for granted, without the tiniest understanding of how and why our images can be made to excel time after time .... Get The Book

InDesign Killer Tips and Adobe InDesign CS Bible - Here, then, is the book of side bars on how to be efficient with Adobe's InDesign. It is not designed to teach you how to use InDesign, it's designed to teach you how to be more efficient with InDesign .... Get The Book

iPod Fan Book and iPod & iTunes Hacks - iPod Fan Book is geared towards just that: the iPod fan. Not music fans, so much, but iPod fans. These are people who, if the iPod wasn't so much about playing music and was instead about toasting bread, they would still own it and carry it around. .... Get The Book

Book: Cult of Mac - This is without a doubt one of the very best books about the Macintosh to have been published for many years. It isn’t a history of Apple computer (if you want that, try the excellent “Apple Confidential 2.0” by Owen Linzmayer, also from No Starch press); but rather a look at contemporary attitudes towards the Macintosh and the Apple brand around the world. The “around the world” aspect of the book is one of the things that make this book so special: though readers in America might not know it, but Mac-fandom runs around the world, and in Japan especially there are some of the most ardent and active supporters of the Mac to be found anywhere .... Book Review: brand fanaticism - I think I can recommend The Cult of Mac, a fat, nicely-designed coffee table book covering in one- and two-page features pretty much every weird corner of the Mac universe – from the subculture of fantasy Mac designs to the hordes of people proudly bearing Apple tattoos on their arses. .... Color Management in Mac OS X: A Practical Approach - Book Review - Color Management in Mac OS X begins by introducing readers to concepts such as “gamut” and “rendering intents” that are defined and explained with detailed text, screen shots, and high-quality illustrations. From the opening chapter, we understand this is a serious instructional text geared to teach Macintoshers to use input and output color profiles to achieve superior results. Apple provides ColorSync for supported applications, and imaging applications (such as Photoshop) have their own capabilities. .... Get The Book

Mac OS X Power Hound - Book Review - Hey, guess what? Rob can WRITE! Yes sir, the man has talent! Mac OS X Power Hound is a book full of useful things that any Mac OS X user will find helpful and worth knowing. As an expert Mac user and ex-IT manager, even I learned some nifty tricks I hadn’t known about before after reading a few pages of this book. .... Get The Book

Learning Unix for Mac OS X Panther - This book is for the skilled Mac user who would like to know a little more about the operating system behind the scenes. There's also information about the Mac's brand of Unix, so someone familiar with Unix but new to the Mac will also find stuff to learn. For those confident in their Mac and Unix skills, however, there's not much new in the book's 168 pages. That's not to say it's a bad book; I found it quite enjoyable to read, and it's a good title to keep in mind to recommend to a Unix novice. .... Get The Book

Charles Moore Reviews 40 Digital Photography Techniques, Second Edition - 40 Digital Photography Techniques is broadly targeted at "virtually anyone using a digital camera," from home hobbyists to professional photographers and Web designers, but its approach and content will be of interest primarily to those getting up to speed with digital photography through the moderately advanced amateur level. The book is pitched as being "written for new digital camera owners in a language that's easy to understand." There is also a section comparing the distinctions between film and digital cameras as a guide to those making that transition .... Get The Book

Wil Wheaton's Book Reviewed - I've only read the first four chapters so far (greetings from the bakery cafe on Route One in Dedham, aka the "B" Venue for my weekly casual lunch away from the office), but I'm all ready to recommend it to people. It's the perfect thing to read over lunch, or while flying from one coast to the other. It's a thoughtful piece; Wheaton's tales of navigating the unsure waters between Snotty Kid and Responsible Grownup serve to remind me that Life = Experiences x Perspective. .... Get The Book

Mac OS X Help Line, Panther Edition - Book Review - I've got to add Mac OS X Help Line (Help Line for short) to the canon of best OS X books. The Ray brothers’ Unleashed is geared more toward the Unix-oriented sysadmin/expert user. In contrast, Landau’s Help Line is written for the sophisticated OS X end user; someone who doesn't need the plumb the Uniy depths of OS X, yet needs detailed information on complex topics. .... Book Review: Apple Confidential 2.0 - The Definitive History of the World's Most Colorful Company - This is an updated version (hence the "2.0") which has been updated to include events and innovations through 2003. Linzmayer provides a thorough history and in-depth look at the culture of Apple and the "casual" corporate environment. It provides detailed timelines and background on the key players that have helped Apple evolve to where it is today. .... Get The Book

Book Review: Microsoft Office for Mac OS X 2004 - Well known to readers of Macworld and PCWorld, Schwartz approaches the topic in the required Visual Quickstart Guide manner. This uninspired but very direct approach leaves out excessive prose and demands that each topic be dealt with before the reader has turned the page. Since each page is half-illustration, half-text, the result is that any one topic is fully explained within a page of rapid-fire bullet points .... Get The Book

Panther By the Book: A Mac OS X Book Review - Here is another distinguished book written by an author (and endorsed by another, Ted Landau the creator of MacFixit) who clearly isn't afraid -- and enjoys even -- getting his hands dirty in the one business which many diehard Mac enthusiasts most resented when it emerged that OS X would be Unix based. Here are lucid, comprehensive and well-set out and prioritized approaches to users, permissions, logins, networking and security, printing and faxing, firewalls and disk maintenance. At over 600 pages, there's intentionally and rightly little room for broad discussion of applications except where these are likely to cause trouble... .... Get The Book

Book review: How to Do Everything with Your iPod & iPod mini Second Edition - There aren’t many digital audio players on the market that warrant having a book written about them, and after reading through How to Do Everything with Your iPod & iPod mini Second Edition, I am convinced that even the iPod is not worthy of its own book. At least, not this one. .... Get The Book

Review: Hardware Hacking: Have Fun While Voiding Your Warranty (book) - Hardware Hacking: Have Fun While Voiding Your Warranty outlines the basics of hacking and electrical engineering and then presents several projects for the aspiring hacker to try at home. Aimed at the most entry-level audience, readers with prior experience in the field will likely find much of the material rather elementary and redundant. .... Get The Book

Cult of Mac: The Book - The designer, Derek Yee, has done an astonishing job laying it out. The graphics look absolutely fantastic. Derek is a Mac nut and it shows in spades. His work is a labor of love. He's turned it into a really nice book. .... Get The Book

Charles Moore Reviews Mac OS X Panther Hacks - First, that "industrial strength" in the subtitle is to be taken seriously. While a fair bit of the 590 page volume's content deals with GUI-accessible matters, if you're not inclined to get up close and personal with the Unix command line that lives behind OS X Panther's a spectacular user interface, then you won't really get the full value from this book., which is targeted primarily to intermediate and power users with a yen to make the big cat dance to their tune .... Photoshop CS: The Art of Photographing Women - Photoshop CS: The Art of Photographing Women is about the process of photographing women and making them look good. At 14 chapters, it is comprised of two parts: Workflow: from Capture to Digital Postproduction, and Projects: Behind the Camera and in Front of the Computer. .... Get The Book

Review: Just a Geek (book) - Wheaton does not discuss his Web coding learning process in enough detail to interest readers who are only in it for the technical element. Just a Geek will appeal to ST:TNG fans, and I would think the ones who hated Wheaton’s character might learn something from him. Those of us who liked his character are going to like the book, because we saw all along that Wesley Crusher represented the awe in all of us. .... Get The Book

MacPaint creator's new art is photography - As a member of the original Apple Macintosh team, Bill Atkinson created pioneering graphics programs such as MacPaint and QuickDraw. He went on to co-found short-lived Silicon Valley icon General Magic before leaving the software industry to become a nature photographer. Now, after nearly a decade in the wilderness, he's back with a new and intriguing book of photographs, ``Within the Stone.'' .... Get The Book

iPhoto 4: The Missing Manual, 3rd Edition - That's the great thing about this book. Although some of it is overkill (do people really use their camera phones with iPhoto?), there's a wealth of information in here—clearly explained and easily located—that makes iPhoto as useful as Apple hoped it would be. Not only does it teach you how to make better use of the program (it even has a menu by menu appendix so you can easily work through it with iPhoto open), it teaches you how to create content worthy of the program. .... How To Do Everything With Mac OS X Panther - Kirk McElhearn, of Macworld and TidBITS fame, has written a reasonable beginner's level book about Mac OS X Panther. What is unreasonable about the book is that awful 'Everything' word. Ignore it, because it ain't gonna happen here. What you will find is a collection of very readable, concise and efficient chapters covering most of Panther's features. This book also features a great idea, known as 'Voices From The Community', including an 8 page section on writers and how they use their Macs. For the reader who wants everything, this is a slim and spotty book. But if you are an average Mac user who is new to Panther, this book is very helpful ... Get The Book

Book Review: "The Spam Letters" and "The Best of the Joy of Tech" -
Jonathan Land is man who obviously has far too much time on his hands. He crafts witty, often savage replies to spammers seemingly in the hope of eliciting some sort of response. Usually, and predictably, he doesn't get any sort of reply at all, but in a few cases he does, and these give rise to the best parts of the book, where his increasingly irrational messages contrast sharply with the seriousness of the spammers in their efforts to make a sale. Nigerian 419 fraudsters prove the most fertile ground for this since the spam they deal in is designed to solicit a personal response

There's also a lovely sense of irony that pervades Nitrozac and Snaggy's work. They know they are geeks and they are drawing cartoons for geeks, but that doesn't stop them poking fun at geeks for their (to the outside world at least) inexplicable sense of priorities

The Missing Manual - iPod & iTunes: Second Edition - iPod & iTunes: Second Edition is a fine addition to the Missing Manual series. It's well organized, it includes copious screen captures for clarity of instruction, the writing style is light and informative, and there's at least one Queen reference. The only trouble is that, if you've been using your iPod with iTunes for more than half a year, you probably don't need most of what this book offers. You'll get some good tips, sure, but not enough to justify the cost.

Book Review: Secure Architectures with OpenBSD - Though the first four chapters of Secure Architectures with OpenBSD deal with installation and "basic use," this not a book for beginners. If you don't understand the Unix (Minix; Linux) way that things work and don't know (at least) C, stay away. Palmer and Nazario will confuse you

Book Review: O'Reilly's "Mac OS X Unwired" and "Inside .Mac" -
Mac OS X Unwired is a surprising book. It's much more than just a manual or how to use an Airport network. There's as much stuff to read for its sheer interest as there is of practical value, it is thoughtful and well researched, and few Mac users will find nothing of use in its pages. Travelling Mac users who rely on the technology described in its pages, will find this book indispensable

Inside .Mac is aggressively priced given the amount of material covered, and the writing style is clear and thorough, leaning more towards the "Missing Manual" end of the O'Reilly's spectrum than "In A Nutshell" as far the expected knowledge of the reader goes. The only real problem with this book is that only a small proportion of Mac users will ever use most of the stuff Toporek describes

Book Review: iPhoto 4 For Mac OS X - Version 4.0.1 of iPhoto is now current; the modifications and updates inherent in the upgrade from version 4.0 don't appear to change any of the operational function explained within Engst's book. The software is simple enough that experimentation isn't an unreasonable approach to learning. But at under $20, iPhoto 4 for Mac OS X is an inexpensive way of quickly getting up to speed

Sams Teach Yourself Mac OS X Panther All in One - Mac OS X is a far more complicated operating system than Mac OS ever was. Consequently, a tutorial-style book has much more ground to cover if it’s to be genuinely useful to the beginner. Sams Teach Yourself Mac OS X Panther provides solid coverage of Mac OS X, lightweight introductions to AppleWorks and Keynote, and useful tutorials covering the other bundled applications. The sections on iMovie and iDVD are particularly comprehensive ... Get The Book

Panther By the Book: A Mac OS X Book Review - Since the first roundup of Mac OS X books on Think Secret a couple of years ago, the success and market penetration of the OS has been reflected in a multitude of books to support almost every aspect of its use. So, rather than survey every title which has been updated to cover first Jaguar (10.2) and now Panther (10.3), we will look at the very best, most comprehensive, competently-written and enjoyable of the Panther titles -- and some which concentrate particularly well on new software which runs on it ... Charles Moore Reviews iPhoto 4: The Missing Manual - The subject of this review, iPhoto 4: The Missing Manual is IMHO, one of the finest books in the series, although my personal interest in digital photography may color my perspective somewhat. Nominally "the book that should have been in the box," iPhoto 4: TMM is a lot more than a surrogate users-manual for iPhoto 4, although it is certainly that. Authors David Pogue (who originally conceived the "Missing Manuals" series) and O'Reilly's in-house digital photography guru Derrick Story ... Get The Book

Review: Hardware Hacking Projects for Geeks - Hardware Hacking Projects for Geeks is a guide to several interesting, if not entirely practical, electronics projects for the casual to advanced tinkerer. Review: Apple Confidential 2.0 - The 304 pages of Apple Confidential 2.0 are accompanied by an index as well as a bibliography of other books on the computer industry. The book is divided into 25 chapters, with each chapter providing a self-contained part of Apple’s history: the computers, the highs, the lows, the people involved. Woz’s Wanderings, What Jobs Did NeXT, The Clone Quandary, and The Making of Macintosh are just a few of the chapter titles ... Get The Book

Mac OS X: The Missing Manual, Panther Edition. - Pogue writes in a clear, entertaining style, improving the sometimes dry subject matter with illustrations and interesting sidebars. He covers both Mac OS X and the "iApps" that come with it, as well as related topics like networking and security. The book is usable as both a manual and a reference; one can read it from front to back or dive in via the comprehensive index to answer a particular question ... Get The Book

Real People Reviews: 'Photoshop CS Killer Tips' a killer book - This is a book for people with at least a modest familiarity of the terms and general use of Adobe’s Photoshop. “Killer Tips” uses some terms that a true novice may need a PS glossary to understand. This is hardly a dislike since it is not a beginners’ guide. There are a few redundant items regarding preference fixes and image sharpening, but it really depends on which methods are appropriate to the need(s) ... Get The Book

Book Review: Mac Toys - Mac Toys is written for less experienced people (as the introduction states), typically people who are using a computer for the first time, or are not very experienced. Although, there are also sections, that include background and technical information, that are very interesting to read for all levels of users. The main problem with this book (which no one can help) is that hardware and software are upgraded so often that printed material cannot hope to compete in an ever-changing environment ... Teach Yourself Visually Mac OS X v.10.3: Panther - Although the subject matter seems to only follow a loose progression, running in a slightly random order, we found it addresses subjects in the same way as a person using a Mac for the first time. Mac OS X Panther for Dummies - The whole book adopts an irreverent tone, which lends the text a certain pace. It promises not to be boring and it lives up to this guarantee. Although the comedic style makes the book quite an entertaining read, it can get in the way of navigating the sections. It won't be a problem if you're reading the book from start to finish, but if you want to dip into it for quick reference, you'll need to visit the index ... Get The Book
