Introduction
Updated: 7/26/04
This Buyer's Guide compares the 17" iMac G4/1.25GHz, which has a SuperDrive optical drive, to the eMac G4/1.25 GHz, which also has a SuperDrive.
The iMac G4/1.25GHz was released in September, 2003. It was the middle model of a family of three, which included a G4/1 GHz machine with a 15 inch screen at the low-end, and a G4/1.25GHz iMac with a 20 inch screen at the high-end.
The eMac G4/1.25 GHz was released 8 months later in April, 2004. It is the high-end model of a family of two, which includes a G4/1.25 GHz machine at the low-end, that has half the hard drive capacity, and a Combo Drive instead of the SuperDrive.

In processor performance, as expected, the two machines turn in just about the same scores. In many of the scores where the eMac is ahead, we believe this is due to the fact that the eMac has twice the amount of high-speed L2 cache.
The difference in 'Processor G4 Tuned' Test seems a little excessive to us ... we would like to see that score confirmed elsewhere.
The graphics card on the iMac is clearly faster than the one in the eMac. The iMac has twice the amount of graphics memory.
The eMac is hurt in the iDVD Import Test because of its drive's slightly slower ability at dealing with single large files.
Graphics (Card) Test is based on CineBench 2003. In this type of image rendering, the graphics card takes the lead
