Specially prepared for Eric ... Request your own Custom Comparison

Introduction

6/29/04

This Buyer's Guide compares the PowerMac Dual G4/1 GHz (Quicksliver), which has the SuperDrive optical drive, to the PowerMac Dual G5/2.0 GHz, which also has a SuperDrive.

The PowerMac Dual G4/1 GHz (Quicksliver) was released in January, 2002. It was the high-end model of a family of three, which included a single processor G4/800 MHz machine at the low-end, and a single G4/933 MHz Tower in the middle.

The PowerMac Dual G5/2.0 GHz was released 18 months later in June, 2003. It was the high-end model of a family of three, which included a single processor G5/1.6 GHz machine at the low-end, and a single G5/1.8 GHz Tower in the middle. In November, 2003, the single 1.8 GHz machine was replaced with a dual processor one running at the same speed.

Notes

In basic processor performance, the 2.0 GHz machine turns in a 100 to 130 percent performance improvement over the 1 GHz G4

Graphics performance on the G5 machine is also exponentially better, helped by a much more advanced graphics card and the machine's greater processing capability.

There is less improvement in drive performance.

In encoding tracks in iTunes, both machines turn in about the same score. We think this is because the bottleneck in carrying out these encodes is not at the processor level. The processors on these machines were only about 50% saturated, meaning data was not getting to them fast enough.

Processor performance based on CineBench 2003

Processor G4 Tuned Test based on AltiVec Fractal program

Graphics (Card) Test is based on CineBench 2003. In this type of image rendering, the graphics card takes the lead

Graphics (Processor) Test is based on CineBench 2003. In this type of image rendering, the processor takes the lead

Graphics Gaming (Card) Test is based on the game 4x4 EVO2 .. a racing game. All settings are at highest quality. This game is more graphics card dependent

Graphics Gaming (Processor) Test is based on the game Giants.. All settings are at highest quality. This game is more processor dependent ... will also make used of dual processors if present

The 'General Interface' test is based on Let1kWindowsBloom, which is freely available.

The Photoshop (Workflow) score is based on the BareFeats Photoshop Action Script, which you can download and run on your own machine, if you have Photoshop.
