OK - laughter is not necessary, but I know its coming anyway. My husband got a new laptop, and I was passed down his iBook G4, which I am perfectly happy with. Only the damn thing was <filthy. The man is a smoker, so the case was covered in ashy fingerprint, etc. So I decided to clean my 'new' computer with the best cleaner I had - Bam. Best stuff in the world. I was not stupid enough to actually spray the Bam on the key board or the surrounding areas, but lightly wet a paper towel to run over the areas surrounding the keyboard and a light dusting of the board itself. Now my shift key doesn't work, my 'y', my 'h', my 't', and because the 'shift' doesn't work, none of my numbers, half my punctuation, etc. My mouse is also very sluggish and as temperamental as a two year old

Now, I have sprayed it down with 91% alcohol as was suggested on another mac site, and it is current in front of a fan hopefully drying out. Any other suggestion would be so very helpful and appreciated. And at this point, feel free to laugh at the Mac idiot.

Currently using a 7.5-year-old Titanium PowerBook plus a new 22" Dell display. OSX4.11. I design print, web and graphics. But simply can't afford a pro-level system.

Can I be reasonably productive with a MacBook and the Dell? Or do I need to save for additional months to get a Mac Book Pro? (Either will probably be a refurb. Either will be max'd for RAM.)

Last question. If I can, I'd like to continue on using my CS2 Suite and Dreamweaver 8 Suite while funds accumulate. Then upgrade to those apps on the PC side (running on the new Mac laptop in Windows and on my computer at the half-time job). And then finally upgrade to those apps in either CS3 or CS4 for Mac.

Adobe says I own enough software to qualify for both upgrades (PC & Mac). And I can live with somewhat slower CS2 performance in Leopard for a while (it'll seem fast to me). It's only if things don't work that productivity might be threatened.

TIA...

Sorry to have no replies. Thought I would give anyone interested an update. I returned from europe to the US and the fan noise disappeared. I guess it was connected to the power supply??? Anyway. I ordered the replacement fans...guess I am stocked incase I have fan issues down the road.

Hi -

Can you give me the current state of knowledge of macbook pro fan issues. I dont have the whine, but the intermittent growl - fan hitting plastic sound that is often described but rarely diagnosed. I see that I can replace the fans myself or take it into the shop. there are also mention of logic board issues.

What is the current state of play. Does replacing the fans fix the issue?

My machine is not apple cared (doh!) and 1.5 years old. Should I expect another repair in another 18 months?

Advice and assistance appreciated

Hi

A search of 'macbook pro fan noise' on the web will yield numerous results, but not much help. Yes, there is info on the infamous whine and a tutorial on replacing the fans. One can always take it back to apple and wait I guess....

question: does the fan clicking noise which seems to plague these machines go away with a fan replacement??? is there a logic board issue as well???

I would like to hear from actual people who have had this problem and had the fans replaced....here's hoping

thanks

I have been looking at the iMac as I would like to change to Apple computers , but do not like the iMac monitor design. it is just too wide on the bottom of the monitor. I like a monitor that has a thin frame all around.

This one thing is keeping me from getting the iMac. I keep hopping that Apple will make one with the frame all with equal thickness . Thin sides all around look so much better.

Mac Hardware :: Macworld iPhone Software Apple unveils iPhone SDK

Subject: Macworld iPhone Software Apple unveils iPhone SDK
Apple on Thursday unveiled the tools and technologies that will allow independent software developers to create and sell programs for the iPhone and iPod touch. In an event at the company’s headquarters in Cupertino, California, Apple executives unveiled a revised set of iPhone developer tools, based on the company's existing tools for developing Mac software.

“We’re excited about creating a vibrant third-party developer community with potentially thousands of native applications for iPhone and iPod touch,” said Apple CEO Steve Jobs.

Applications for the iPhone will be built on a Mac using a new version of Xcode, available in a beta version today as a part of Apple's new iPhone Developer Program. A new version of Interface Builder will allow developers to quickly design their iPhone software's interface and localize the software for different languages. Other tools monitor memory usage and other aspects of the iPhone's internals in an attempt to aid developers in improving the speed of their programs.

Although developers will be able to compile their programs and execute them immediately on a real iPhone, Apple also showed off a software-based iPhone Simulator. This program runs on a Mac, and simulates the entire API stack of the iPhone OS.

Scott Forstall, Apple’s vice president of iPhone Software, explained that Apple had to build a new version of its development framework, Cocoa, for the iPhone. Dubbed Cocoa Touch, the new development tools are based on the touch interaction with the iPhone instead of the keyboard and mouse interaction users have with a desktop computer.

Forstall said the iPhone is made up of several Core technologies. Much of what you find in the iPhone operating system is the same as what you would find in the Mach: the foundation layers of the Core OS, Core Services, and Media, made the move more or less directly from OS X. Layered on top is the new Cocoa Touch API, rather than the Mac's Cocoa API.

Among the tools available to developers will be SQlite, a built-in database system, and Core Location, which uses cell tower and wi-fi base station data to determine your phone's geographic location.

“So we have a fantastic set of tools, in addition to the amazing set of frameworks that make up the iPhone OS,” said Forstall.

Apple also took some time to show off some of the newest Web apps that run in Safari. Forstall highlighted sites like Facebook and Bank of America during his talk.

The free beta iPhone SDK is available immediately and can be downloaded from Apple’s Web site. The $99 iPhone Developer Program, also introduced today, will initially be available in the U.S. and will expand to other countries in the coming months. Apple is accepting applications beginning today from enterprise customers who would like to join the private iPhone Enterprise Beta Program.

Not sure how important the incremental increase in CPU or the faster bus is. But, often those increases are accompanied by a better graphics card, an extra RAM slot, larger hard drive, and/or more L2 cache.

I recently got an external hard drive and ever since I started using it my finder windows go all crazy. The icon preview icons won't snap to grid and when I try to make them, they throw a fit. Does this have anything to do with software or anything from my external?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I just sold my old 1.33 GHZ iBOOK G4 laptop, and I'm about to get a new/refurb mac...
I'm assuming that switching to a duo 2 core with 667 bus and 2.0ghz processing speed should be blazing in terms of speed and far less CPU draining than my old computer, right? I use my computer mainly for music production, and, yes I know that RAM matters a lot... but just in terms of the computers themselves, I should have a much more powerful, faster, computer, able to handle FAR more without crashing, right?
Also, in buying my new computer...
Do I really need an extra 133 (to 800) in bus speed or an extra.16 GHz to 2.16?? I could get a faster MAC, and I know it never hurts, but will it make that much of a difference?
