The new iMac does have a fan, but it is supposed to be very quiet...

It's all very well to LOOK cool and stuff but I'm not likely to buy one based just on the cool factor (unless it ships in black - or maybe brushed steal - yeah!). How does it perform?? Do I get a lot of bang for my buck?

Well, you are getting a G4 so that will make your AltiVec (aka Velocity Engine) aware applications very happy. We will be ordering up each of the new iMacs for benchmarking over at MacSpeedZone, so keep an eye out for results there. The G4/800 (with Super Drive remember) is a great deal IMHO.

Don't know if this is good news for Apple or not. I was eyeing the G4 tower and a flat panel display for a total cost of approx $4000, but waiting to see if a speed increase was to be announced. Now I think I'll buy a top of the line imac which has all the features (especially superdrive and iDVD) I'm looking for with a savings of $1200.

Oh, and the fan is like the one in a laptop. It only runs if a certain temp is reached and is relatively quiet.

I was also about to buy the G4 tower but also think I will buy the iMac G4. That is unless Apple announces a new amazing 1.2 GIG G4 tower this week. Then I am back to spending $4000+

Well, this week is pretty unlikely, but I bet new towers are not too far off. I would guess (and this is pure speculation, not "insider information") Apple will hold a between events press conference, like they did to announce the iBook & iPod, announcing faster towers.

Remember, not counting the 2 remaining CRT iMacs, the iBook is now the only G3 machine Apple is producing. They need to maintain some distinction between their pro and consumer machines. I would guess this is also why we don't get monitor spanning (a "pro" feature) with the 2002 iMacs either...

Just my $.02

If so, I expect that Sonnet will be the company to release it. You might want to post you question on the Sonnet Forum which is moderated by sonnet staff...

Hi,

I've been reading comparisons between the imac 800 and the powerbook 800 DVI. Is there any way to compare the latest screen/graphics engines (17" imac and latest high res screen on powerbook)?

Thanks,
Tom

Hello, i'm a computer user, that would like to try mac, and maybe switch to mac, because of the multimedia-software that can only be used on macs.
off course my budget is pretty limited, but I could buy an iMac from someone I know. It's a Imac DV 400 mhz, 10 Gb, 384 MB Ram. Is this iMac powerful enough for me to discover the world of apple-lovers?

Mail me @ lh_raf@hotmail.com

Thanx a lot,

Raf

I nearly always have a spare iMac if anyone wants me to re-furbish and sell one to them to get them started. I've found that a 400Mhz slot loading iMac DV with 256Mb RAM runs Panther superbly and would be ideal for a cheap alternative! Click here if you are interested! Arrow
