I bought a G4 iMac. I really like it.
It's the polar opposite of my previous machine, a Power Computing PowerWave that was big, bulky, beige, and very expandable. The PowerWave had been upgraded many times, and I enjoyed working under the hood. However, the iMac's small size and value sold me. I think the thing I appreciate MOST is the lack of NOISE! Expandable boxes are just too dang loud. |

| I compared the two models before I bought the iMac. What isn't mentioned in the article is the SuperDrive, which of course would put the tower about $1000 more after you add at least the 15" lcd monitor. Add another 20GB to the tower hard drive and there goes another hundred bucks. If you compare similarly-equipped models for the same money, it's obvious that the iMac is the better choice. |

| One point you forgot to mention when comparing the 2 machines is that the iMac G4 has a 5400 rpm hard drive whereas the G4 Tower has a 7200 rpm drive. I have found this to make a significant difference in overall responsiveness in older machines when I replaced a 5400 rpm drive with a 7200 rpm drive. |

Once again, Apple has released new machines between expos. The new Power Macs all sport dual processors running at 867MHz, 1.0 GHz or 1.25 GHz.
Architecture improvements found on the Xserve havce found their way to the towers. Double Data Rate RAM and a new system controller are two exciting examples.
We welcome your comments on the new machines.

| I would love to see some kind of benchmark comparison or performance shootout of some kind between the old quicksilver Dual 1Gig G4 machines which have a slower memory buss (133mhz) but 2 megs of L3 cache, and the new Dual 1Gig G4 machines which have the faster buss speed (167mhz) but only 1 meg of L3 cache. I am really jonesin' for a faster MAC, but I want to get the best bang for my buck, which, thanks to Apple has become rather ambiguous with these new models. |
