The iMac is a range of all-in-one Macintosh desktop computers designed and built by Apple Inc. The iMac was described by Steve Jobs as, "The excitement of the internet. The simplicity of Macintosh." It has been the primary part of Apple's consumer desktop offerings since its introduction in 1998, and has evolved through four distinct forms. In its original form, the iMac G3, the iMac was gum drop- or egg-shaped with a CRT monitor, mainly enclosed by colored, translucent plastic. The second major revision, the iMac G4, moved to a design of a hemispherical base containing all the main components and an LCD monitor on a freely moving arm attached to the top of the base. The iMac G5 and the Intel iMac placed all the components immediately behind the display, creating a chunky unified design that tilts only up and down on a simple metal base. On July 27, 2010 Apple updated it's line of iMacs to feature the new Intel Core processors across the line. Both 21.5 inch models now feature Core i3 processors as does the low end 27 inch model. With this refresh Apple also did away with the black back plate on the iMac transitioning to a seamless Aluminum enclosure. Other design changes include the tapering of the pedestal and a redesign of the speakers to make them clearer and louder with better bass response and less distortion. On this date Apple also announced it's new "Apple Magic Trackpad" peripheral, a trackpad similar to that of the Macbook Pro for use with the iMac. They also introduced their first ever AA NiMH battery charger intended to simplify the use of batteries in it's new peripherals ... Read More

I eventually picked up a 20" Apple Cinema Display to use at home when I want the desktop experience. Up to this point I've been very satisfied with Apple's products, particularly their displays. I've been considering upgrading for quite some time now, and about a month ago I decided I to pick up a new 27" iMac quad-core i5. I've always been wary of the notion of the "all-in-one" PC. A selling point on the new 27" iMac is the two-way display port, which will allow you to continue using the iMac display with a new machine when the time to upgrade comes ...
